Contributions to the East Matagorda Bay Legal Defense Fund

With all the talk in all of the newspapers, and the lead stories on all the TV Networks, and all the advertisement about going green, we can’t even seem to save the bays and estuaries and marshlands in this part of Texas. Alligators are dying to the east of us, Whooping Cranes to the west and now the powers in Matagorda County want to destroy the last pristine bay on the Texas Gulf Coast, our beloved East Matagorda Bay.

Through talks with TPWD Biologists, we have learned that the Spotted Sea Trout and Red Drum recruitment in East Matagorda Bay is higher than it has been since records have been being kept. Through gill net survey’s and creel counts, biologists have been able to determine the brisk nature of replacement of the Trout and Redfish, as well as the crabs and finfish that are so vital to their survival. There are lines that must not be crossed in the name of progress; and the destruction of wildlife habitat and the flora that adorns the marshes and bays in our wonderful State is one of them.

The Southwest Corner Cut, now referred to as Rawlings Cut, will change the salinity gradient of the bay so drastically, that in periods of drought, it will severely disrupt the life cycles of the marine animals who call the bay home. A primary example is evident in the loss of 23 Whopping Cranes in the Aransas Wildlife Area. The salinity level got so high from the drought last winter that the baby crabs that are a main food source for the Cranes, did not hatch. The reason was the lack of fresh water release from the San Antonio and Guadalupe Rivers due to human consumption.

East Matagorda Bay has no flowing river of fresh nourishing water that is so essential for maintaining the proper saline gradient in the bays and estuaries that will promote propagation of all species that rely on the bays for their very lives.

As good stewards of the Natural Resources that Texas has been blessed with, we MUST do all in our power to protect them for the generations that will follow.

With the current financial woes that our great country faces, the money to construct a Cut and Bridge into East Matagorda just seems like a total waste of taxpayer money as well as a travesty against East Matagorda Bay.

Please do your part, no matter how small, to help East Matagorda Bay Foundation , save our bay, by your making your contributions to the East Matagorda Bay Legal Defense Fund. The volunteers who are mounting this fight on behalf of all of the people of Texas, cannot bear the financial burden alone.
